This is really starting to bug me; I can’t figure it out. I’m good at math and I’m good with numbers, but I just can’t seem to figure out how the hell fast food restaurants number their orders. Yeah, so the numbers do go in order, but why don’t they start at 1? Sometimes they start at 100, sometimes they start at 200, and sometimes at 300. What the hell do these numbers at fast food restaurants mean!??
At Taco Bell, sometimes the numbers are in the 100’s, sometimes in the 200’s and for the first time, I got a number in the 300’s. So I bet you’re wondering, “well, how do you know they don’t go like, ‘198, 199, 200, 201…’?” Well, I know, because one time, at Taco Bell, my number was 298. They called number 298, then 299, and 200 again!
I’m scheming to figure out whether or not the numbering system goes by time, day or if it’s random. For example, when I worked at Intel–where there were multiple buildings–our conference room numbers looked something like: 2215. Obviously, we didn’t have 2000-some-odd conference rooms. The first digit represents the building number, the second is the floor in that building, and the last two are the conference room number. See, that’s logical if you ask me.
So what do the fast food order numbers mean? Maybe the first digit represents to-go versus eat-in orders. But no, I know that’s not the case. Ahh, this is so damn confusing. What the hell do those number mean!?
